FF: The Power of Words

Lily was disoriented a moment, well who wouldn’t be for this was her first time at having traveled by such means. Still she decided it was a smoother method than by boat, and looked about her to discover their location. There were buildings around and although they looked inhabited she couldn’t see anyone, they didn’t need any supplies so Ayla lead the way through the town. As they got further form the town center Lily noticed that some of the buildings began to look very unusual, instead of wood or stone the doorways appeared to be made of books, how peculiar.

They noticed a crowd of people gathering some way ahead, so they moved closer curious to see what had brought everyone away from the town. There in a clearing stood three of the most unusual folk – or were they creatures? Lily didn’t know but as no one seemed alarmed she stood quietly beside Ayla and watched as the crowd stilled and one of the three figures in the center began speaking.

Sylvan Poets

It soon became evident that this was a performance or a contest as each of the three took turns to recite poetry: short humorous rhymes, long serious odes, lyrical, entertaining, or absolutely confusing- such a wide range spilled from the lips of these artists. Lily soon joined the crowd in applauding the performers, who bowed and moved to the side of the crowd where refreshments were waiting.  Ayla angled her head towards the road again and the travelers moved on without waiting to see if the poets continued. Lily was silent but a moment and then a flood of questions poured out: ” Who were they? Did they live in that town or were they visiting? Do you think they share their poetry often? Who won?” Ayla shook her head and smiled, ” I don’t know the answers, but I do know I enjoyed their poetry and I feel refreshed and ready for our journey to continue”. Lily made a thoughtful ” hmm” sound then mused aloud ” Maybe the townspeople used books for building with because their poets told them stories instead.. or maybe there are so many poets in that town that when they all write their books there are too many books to store in the library.. what do you think?”

Ayla paused at a divide in the road, ” I think” she replied ” I think I need to look at a book of maps to work out where to next” . She delved into her satchel but the first thing she withdrew was the portal stone, she felt a warmth as it glowed softly in her hand. “Where to next, where do we find what we are looking for?” she spoke softly, no longer startled by this magic Lily watched a glimmering orange portal appear before them. Smiling to each other Lily and Ayla stepped through the portal and into another location.
